IELTS for university in Europe: which scores universities require in 2026
Updated:
European universities word the language requirement almost identically: IELTS Academic, overall not below X, no section below Y, result no older than two years. What differs is X and Y. This guide collects the typical thresholds by country as of September 2026, explains how to read a requirement and when to sit, and lists the alternatives for anyone who finds IELTS inconvenient.
Important: the thresholds below are typical values from universities' official pages as of September 2026, not a national rule. The same university can require 6.0 for one programme and 7.0 for another. The specific programme's page decides.
The overall picture: bachelor's and master's
| Level | Typical threshold | Section minimum | Who asks for more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's | 6.0–6.5 | 5.5–6.0 | research universities in the Netherlands and Scandinavia, top UK universities (6.5–7.0) |
| Master's | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0–6.5 | law, medicine, education, journalism, business schools (7.0–7.5) |
| Doctorate | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0 | depends on the faculty and the supervisor |
Study needs IELTS Academic; universities do not accept General Training (the difference is in the Academic vs General Training guide).
By country
- The Netherlands. Universities of applied sciences (hogescholen): bachelor's 6.0, sometimes 5.5 per section. Research universities: bachelor's and master's 6.5, often with 6.0 per section; several programmes 7.0.
- Germany. English-taught programmes: more often 6.5, sometimes 6.0; German-taught ones need TestDaF or DSH, and IELTS plays no part. Some programmes accept a B2 level from any certificate.
- Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway. The bachelor's and master's standard is 6.5 with a 5.5 minimum per section (Sweden words it that way almost everywhere); individual programmes 7.0.
- Czechia, Poland, Hungary, the Baltics. English-taught programmes usually 6.0, sometimes 5.5 for a bachelor's and 6.5 for a master's; many accept Cambridge and Duolingo.
- Italy, Spain, Portugal. English-taught programmes usually 6.0, with 5.5 seen for a bachelor's; several universities accept a medium-of-instruction letter.
- Switzerland. English-taught master's 6.5–7.0; bachelor's programmes are mostly in the local languages.
- France. English-taught programmes at grandes écoles and universities 6.0–6.5 for a bachelor's and 6.5–7.0 for a master's; French-taught ones need DELF/DALF or TCF.
- United Kingdom. Bachelor's 6.0–6.5, master's 6.5–7.0, top universities and humanities faculties 7.0–7.5, usually with a 6.0–6.5 minimum per section. For degree-level programmes universities generally accept regular IELTS Academic; IELTS for UKVI is needed below degree level.
How to read a requirement
- Two numbers, not one. "6.5 overall, 6.0 in each component" is checked against the average and the weakest section separately. A profile of 7.0, 7.0, 6.5 and 5.5 gives 6.5 overall and fails. Lay out your profile in the band calculator.
- Writing usually decides. For AZ and RU speakers Writing is usually half a band below the rest; it is the section that hits the minimum. The Writing descriptors show where the score goes.
- The conditional offer. Many universities give a conditional offer without the language and expect the result by a set date, often June or July for a September start. That leaves time for a retake.
- Pre-sessional courses. UK and Dutch universities, when 0.5 band is missing, often offer a summer language course instead of a rejection; check whether that option exists.
When to sit
- The result must be no older than 2 years at the date the university sets (application or enrolment); count from the test date.
- Application deadlines for a September intake: the UK and the Netherlands 15 January for many programmes (quota bachelor's in the Netherlands), most European master's January to April, scholarships earlier.
- Plan the exam so that a window remains for a One Skill Retake (60 days) or a full resit before the result deadline. The OSR conditions are in the One Skill Retake guide.
- If you are in Russia, the exam is available only abroad: options, prices and the non-resident rule are in where Russian citizens can take IELTS.
Alternatives to IELTS
Most European universities accept TOEFL iBT, Cambridge B2 First / C1 Advanced and, increasingly, the Duolingo English Test; the score equivalences are in how to convert an IELTS score. Some universities, especially in Central and Southern Europe, accept a medium-of-instruction letter for applicants whose previous degree was taught in English. None of these options is universal: the list of accepted documents is on the programme page, and it is final.
Checklist before registering for the exam
- Three target programmes open, requirements written down: overall, section minimum, validity, accepted tests.
- The highest of the three thresholds is your target.
- The weak section is known from a mock test; the preparation plan targets it.
- The exam date leaves a retake window before the result deadline.
- The way to send the result to the university is clear: direct dispatch by the centre or verification by TRF number (results guide).
Frequently asked questions
- What IELTS score do I need for a bachelor's in Europe?
- Most often 6.0 to 6.5 overall with a 5.5 minimum per section; English-taught programmes at research universities in Scandinavia and the Netherlands more often ask for 6.5. The specific programme sets the requirement; check its page, not general tables.
- And for a master's?
- Usually 6.5 to 7.0 overall with a 6.0 minimum per section; law, medicine, education and journalism programmes and top universities often require 7.0 or higher. A master's almost always needs IELTS Academic, not General Training.
- Do I need IELTS for UKVI to study in the UK?
- For degree-level programmes universities usually accept regular IELTS Academic and confirm the language for the visa themselves; IELTS for UKVI is needed for programmes below degree level and some language courses. Confirm with the admissions office before you register for the test.
- Can I be admitted without IELTS?
- Sometimes. Many universities accept TOEFL iBT, Cambridge B2 First or C1 Advanced and the Duolingo English Test; some accept a letter confirming that your previous degree was taught in English (medium of instruction). The list of accepted documents is always on the programme page; do not plan without it.
