IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and resit rules in Azerbaijan
Updated:
If only one IELTS section let you down, you don't always have to resit the whole exam. One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake a single section — for example, only Writing or only Speaking. This guide explains what OSR is, who it's for, its exact conditions, the full-resit rules, and how to check availability in Baku.
Important: The price, available dates, and whether a centre offers OSR change from time to time. The rules below are stable, but always verify the exact current terms and availability on the official British Council Azerbaijan or IDP IELTS Azerbaijan site. This page does not replace the official source.
What One Skill Retake is
Normally, to raise your score you resit all four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). But if only one section pulled you down, One Skill Retake lets you retake just that section on its own — your other three scores are kept from the original test. It is often faster and cheaper than resitting everything.
The exact conditions (memorise these)
- Computer-delivered only. Your full test must have been computer-delivered. Paper-based results are not eligible for OSR.
- 60-day window. The retake must be sat within 60 calendar days of your original test.
- Once per test. Per full test you get one retake only and only one section.
- Which section. You choose one of the four: Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking.
- Same passport. Use the same passport for the retake that you used for the original test.
How the Test Report Form works
After the retake you receive a new Test Report Form (TRF): it shows the new score for the section you retook plus the other three scores from your original test. That rebuilds a complete set of results. Which TRF (the old one or the new one) to use in your application is your choice — most people pick whichever gives the higher overall band.
When to use OSR vs a full resit
- If only one section is low and your full test was computer-delivered → One Skill Retake is usually faster and cheaper.
- If two or more sections are low → resit the whole exam (OSR covers only one section).
- If you sat on paper → OSR isn't available; you need a full resit.
- If more than 60 days have passed → the OSR window is closed; you need a full exam.
Full-resit rules
You can resit the full IELTS as many times as you like, on any date — there is no cap on the number of attempts; you simply choose a new date and register again. Each resit requires the full fee. Before a resit, it's worth targeting your weak sections specifically so you don't repeat the same mistakes.
Not sure about your result? (Enquiry on Results)
If you think your score was marked incorrectly, before a retake you can consider an Enquiry on Results (EOR) — a request to have your result re-marked. This is not a retake: your already-submitted answers are re-checked. Confirm the conditions and deadlines on the official site.
Availability in Baku
One Skill Retake is offered at selected test centres worldwide — not at every centre. Whether OSR is available in Baku and at the specific centre you choose should be confirmed before you register on the official British Council Azerbaijan or IDP IELTS Azerbaijan site.

Frequently asked questions
- What is One Skill Retake (OSR) and who is it for?
- It lets you retake just one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) instead of the whole exam. Conditions: your full test must have been COMPUTER-delivered, the retake must be within 60 days of the full test, only ONE retake per full test, and only ONE section. The new Test Report Form shows the retake score plus the other three scores from your original test.
- I sat the paper test — is One Skill Retake possible?
- No. One Skill Retake is only available to candidates who took the full test on COMPUTER. If you sat paper-based IELTS, you must resit the whole exam to raise your score.
- Can I retake more than one section at once?

- One Skill Retake is offered at selected test centres worldwide. Whether it's available in Baku and at your specific centre should be confirmed before you register on the official British Council Azerbaijan or IDP IELTS Azerbaijan site — this page does not guarantee availability.
