IELTS results: the TRF, validity, sending scores to universities and the Enquiry on Results
Updated:
After the exam the questions change: when the result arrives, where the form goes, how the university receives it, and what to do if you disagree with the score. This guide follows the result from release to university, explains how to read the Test Report Form, and how to choose between an Enquiry on Results (a re-mark) and a One Skill Retake.
Important: fees, deadlines and dispatch rules can differ between organisers and change from time to time. The rules below are general; check the exact terms in your registration account and on the official British Council Azerbaijan or IDP IELTS Azerbaijan site.
When and where the result appears
| Format | Result |
|---|---|
| Computer-delivered | usually after 3 to 5 days |
| Paper-based (where still offered) | usually after 13 days |
You see the result online in your registration account; you log in with the passport number from registration. The four section scores and the overall band are released together; Speaking is not awaited separately. The official Test Report Form (TRF) follows: one paper copy, and at a number of centres an electronic TRF. How the centre issues the TRF (post, in person, electronically) is shown in your account.
How to read the Test Report Form
The TRF shows the four section scores, the Overall Band, the CEFR level that corresponds to each score (for example 6.5 → B2), the test type (Academic or General Training), the test date, your passport details and the photo taken at registration. Universities read both the overall band and the minimum in each section; an overall 7.0 with a 5.5 in one section fails many requirements. How the overall band is rounded is explained in the band system guide.
The TRF carries a number; organisations confirm the result by that number in the official verification service. A forged TRF is exposed exactly there, so keep away from any offer to "fix" a form.
How long a result is valid
The IELTS partners recommend that results be accepted for 2 years from the test date. That does not mean the score is "erased"; the TRF remains, but most organisations will not accept a result older than 2 years, and some require a shorter window (for example, 2 years at the date of application). If you are planning an application, time the exam so the result covers both the application and the visa dates.
Sending the score to a university or immigration authority
- Direct dispatch. In your registration account you select the receiving organisations (Recognising Organisations); the test centre sends the TRF to them directly. The first few copies (usually up to five) are free, additional ones are paid; deadlines and fees depend on the centre.
- Electronic verification. Many universities no longer want paper: you give the TRF number and they confirm it in the verification service.
- Your own copy. A scan or photo may be accepted for an initial review, but an official decision usually requires direct dispatch or electronic verification.
If an application deadline is close, the computer-delivered test's 3-to-5-day result plus electronic verification is the fastest chain.
Disagree with the score: EOR or a retake
There are two routes, and the choice depends on the situation:
| Enquiry on Results (EOR) | One Skill Retake / full resit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | your existing answers are re-marked | a new test (one section or all) |
| When | within 6 weeks of the test date | OSR: within 60 days; full: any time |
| What you choose | one, several or all sections | OSR: one section; full: all |
| Fee | paid; refunded if any band goes up | the full fee (OSR is usually cheaper) |
| Outcome | usually a few days to three weeks | a new TRF |
| When it makes sense | the Writing or Speaking score is clearly below what your preparation supports | the score genuinely reflects your preparation but misses the requirement |
An EOR rarely changes anything in Listening and Reading, because the answers are objective; Writing and Speaking can change on re-marking. If an application deadline would pass while you wait for the EOR, think about a retake date in parallel. The OSR conditions are in the One Skill Retake guide.
The TRF after a One Skill Retake
When you retake one section you receive a new TRF: the new score for the retaken section plus the other three scores from the original test. The old TRF remains valid too; you choose which one to send. Watch the date when sending to a university: the test date on the new TRF is the original test date, so the two-year window counts from it.

Frequently asked questions
- When are IELTS results released?
- On the computer-delivered test usually 3 to 5 days later, on the paper test (where still offered) 13 days later. You see the result online in your registration account; the official Test Report Form comes afterwards. The Speaking result is released at the same time.
- How many years is an IELTS result valid?
- The IELTS partners recommend that results be accepted for 2 years from the test date; most universities and immigration authorities follow that rule, and some require a shorter window. Confirm the requirement with the organisation you are applying to.
- When can I request an Enquiry on Results (EOR)?
- Within 6 weeks of the test date. You choose one, several or all sections, pay a fee, and the fee is refunded if any section's band goes up. The answer usually takes from a few days to three weeks. It is not a retake: your existing answers are re-marked.
- How do I send my score to a university?
- The most reliable route is having the test centre send the result directly to the organisation: you select the receiving organisations in your account, the first few copies (usually up to five) are free and the rest are paid. Organisations can verify a result by its TRF number in the verification service, which is why they ask for an official dispatch rather than your copy of the TRF.
