What changed in 2026

Paper is on its way out. The IELTS partners (British Council, IDP, Cambridge) are phasing out paper-based IELTS from mid-2026; the switch-over date varies by country. New dates are mostly computer-delivered; in some markets a "Writing on Paper" option lets you handwrite only the Writing section. If a paper date is still offered, you will see it only on the official site.
The non-resident rule. Since January 2025, candidates who are not residents of the country where they test cannot book the paper format in a number of locations; the computer-delivered test needs no proof of residence. This matters for anyone travelling to Azerbaijan to sit the test.
