IELTS or TOEFL for Russian speakers: which to choose in 2026

Updated:

The question "IELTS or TOEFL" is settled not by which test is "easier" but by two things: what your university or immigration programme accepts and which format suits you. This guide compares the two tests on structure, scoring and recognition, looks separately at what matters to a Russian-speaking candidate, and says where to sit if you are in Russia.

Structure: a live conversation against a microphone

The key difference for many is Speaking. In IELTS you talk to a person, can ask for clarification and see the reaction; in TOEFL you speak into a microphone on a timer beside other candidates. Which suits whom is a matter of temperament.

Recognition: where each test works

  • United Kingdom: IELTS is the main test. Some visa routes require IELTS for UKVI specifically (the same test at a certified centre); most universities accept regular IELTS Academic for degree-level students, but check.
  • USA: historically TOEFL, but the great majority of universities accept IELTS too.
  • Canada, Australia, New Zealand: universities accept both; for immigration you need IELTS General Training (or other approved tests), and TOEFL is not used in Canada's and Australia's immigration programmes.
  • Europe (the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and others): almost always both; requirements are stated in each test's own scores.

There is one rule: open the specific programme's page and read what is accepted and with which minimum. The difference between Academic and General Training is explained in a separate guide.

What matters to a Russian-speaking candidate

  • Accents in Listening. IELTS mixes British, Australian and other accents; TOEFL is almost entirely American. If you learned English from American films, TOEFL Listening will feel familiar; if from British textbooks, IELTS.
  • A person or a microphone in Speaking. Russian speakers often note that a live examiner eases the tension: you can clarify the question, and dialogue fills the pauses. Others are calmer speaking into a microphone without an examiner's gaze.
  • Typing. Both tests are now on computer; typing speed in Latin script matters in both. Train it in advance.
  • TOEFL's integrated tasks (read a text, listen to a lecture, write a comparison) require holding two sources in mind; IELTS tasks are shorter and independent.
  • The typical mistakes are the same: articles, the Present Perfect, prepositions, the "th" and "w/v" sounds. They cost marks in both tests; the breakdown is in common English mistakes of Russian speakers.

Where to sit if you are in Russia

Neither IELTS nor TOEFL iBT has been offered in Russia since 2022. The options:

  1. Travel: Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and other countries that are visa-free or issue an electronic visa; the list, prices and the non-resident rule are in where Russian citizens can take IELTS.
  2. Online from home: TOEFL iBT Home Edition and the Duolingo English Test are taken remotely; check availability for your country and recognition by your university separately. IELTS Online (Academic only) exists too, but the list of countries is limited.

How the scores compare

By the ETS comparison table the reference points are: IELTS 6.0 ≈ TOEFL 60 to 78, 6.5 ≈ 79 to 93, 7.0 ≈ 94 to 101, 7.5 ≈ 102 to 109, 8.0 ≈ 110 to 114. These are reference points, not a formula: a university sets the requirement separately for each test, and section minimums may differ. The full IELTS-to-CEFR and TOEFL conversion tables are in how to convert an IELTS score; build your own section scenario in the band calculator.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Open the requirements of three target programmes; write down which tests are accepted and with which minimum.
  2. If at least one accepts only one test, the choice is made.
  3. If both are accepted, ask yourself: a conversation with a person or a microphone? British accents or American? The answer is your test.
  4. Check the nearest centre and date, and register 4 to 6 weeks ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Which test is easier, IELTS or TOEFL?
Neither is easier in level: both test B2 to C1. The difference is format. IELTS: Speaking with a live examiner, a General Training version, shorter and more varied tasks. TOEFL iBT: entirely on computer, Speaking into a microphone, integrated tasks (listen and read, then write or speak). Choose by the format that suits you and by what your university accepts.
Where is IELTS accepted and where TOEFL?
Both are recognised by thousands of universities in the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. IELTS has historically been stronger in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and for immigration (Canada and Australia accept IELTS General Training). A UK visa needs IELTS for UKVI; a regular TOEFL does not qualify. Always check the specific programme's requirement.
Can I take TOEFL in Russia?
No. Like IELTS, TOEFL iBT has not been offered in Russia since 2022; it is taken abroad. For those who cannot travel there are online options: TOEFL iBT Home Edition and the Duolingo English Test, but their availability and recognition must be checked for your country and your university.
How do IELTS and TOEFL scores compare?
By the ETS comparison table, IELTS 7.0 corresponds roughly to TOEFL iBT 94 to 101, IELTS 6.5 to 79 to 93, IELTS 6.0 to 60 to 78, IELTS 7.5 to 102 to 109. These are reference points, not a formula: universities set requirements separately for each test.
